Opera is coming to the Stratford Courthouse next month, with Lyster Opera set to unveil its latest production on Saturday, August 8.
The company will present The Merry Wives of Windsor, a spirited operatic adaptation of William Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, starting at 2pm.
Composed by Otto Nicolai and infused with the wit and warmth of Elizabethan England, the production promises an afternoon of laughter, music, and theatrical delight. Director Daniel Sinfield has brought together a vibrant cast of seasoned performers and emerging talent to breathe new life into Shakespeare’s timeless characters, expertly blending historical authenticity with modern relatability.
The opera follows the misadventures of Sir John Falstaff, a pompous knight who attempts to simultaneously seduce two married women, Mrs Fluth and Mrs Reich, in a bid to secure financial gain.
The clever wives quickly uncover his scheme and orchestrate a series of hilarious pranks to teach the rogue a lesson.
Meanwhile, romantic entanglements and mistaken identities ripple through the town, culminating in a jubilant finale that celebrates wit, loyalty and love.
