David Winter and Lindsay Kennedy have claimed victory in the Bairnsdale Bridge Club’s highly anticipated Anniversary Pairs event, held at the clubrooms.
Henry Gasko and Jean Macleod secured second place in the annual competition, while Anna Kearon and Ann Gibbs rounded out the top three. The Anniversary Pairs ommemorates the rich history of the Bairnsdale Bridge Club, which was established in 1977 and is preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year. The tournament remains a staple on the local bridge calendar alongside established regional events such as the John and Luba Winter Memorial Winter Pairs and the Joan Courtemanche Novice Pairs, offering players the opportunity to earn Australian Bridge Federation Red Masterpoints.
Following the anniversary event, the club hosted its popular “Christmas in July” tournament on Saturday, July 25. The mid-winter event drew local participants as well as traveling players from the Sale and Traralgon bridge clubs for a day of spirited competition.
Playing across nine and a half tables, Robynne Owen and Margaret Hillier took top honours in the North-South division, while Ken Tierney and Peter Lonie claimed victory in the East-West section.
Beyond the competitive play, highlights of the festive gathering included a traditional roast turkey lunch prepared by club members, a multi-prize raffle, and a novelty lucky dip awarded to players who successfully won a trick with a two card.
