A capacity crowd of approximately 300 music lovers packed the Bairnsdale RSL on July 18 for East Gippsland Music’s “Winter Melodies” combined bands concert.
Audience numbers exceeded organisers’ expectations, filling the RSL lounge quickly and prompting band members to set out additional seating to accommodate late arrivals.
The East Gippsland Symphonia opened the afternoon with a half-hour set directed by Carryn Caithness, entertaining the crowd with a selection of concert band medleys.
Following a quick stage changeover, musical director Kees Dogger led East Gippsland Brass through a set featuring classic brass band and jazz pieces, including several original arrangements composed by ensemble members.
The Bairnsdale Gentlemen’s Choir, directed by Evan Bryant, took to the stage next to deliver a performance of timeless vocal melodies.
The highlight of the event was the official debut of East Gippsland Music’s newest ensemble, the East Gippsland Big Band. Led by Gary Jackson and dressed in scarlet-red waistcoats, the band opened with American Patrol, showcasing a classic Big Band era sound.
Jazz vocalist Briony Camp delivered crowd-favourite renditions of The Lady is a Tramp and New York, New York, before the band closed its inaugural performance with a high-energy rendition of Zoot Suit Riot, earning a standing ovation from the crowd.
East Gippsland Music will hold its next combined showcase on October 4 at the Forge Theatre and Arts Hub in Bairnsdale. The upcoming concert will serve as a fundraiser to purchase Australian-made sun-protection hats for members during outdoor community performances.
