Christmas came early to East Gippsland when supporters of Make-A-Wish Australia gathered at Club Eastwood for the East Gippsland volunteer branch’s annual Christmas in July fundraiser on Sunday, July 26.
Held over lunch, the event brought together a wonderful crowd for a delicious meal, plenty of Christmas cheer and an afternoon of fun, all while raising vital funds to help grant wishes for children with critical illnesses.
The atmosphere was festive from the moment guests arrived, with table decorations lovingly prepared by branch volunteers adding a special touch to the occasion. Guests were also treated to bags of caramel popcorn paired with Christmas jokes, bringing extra laughter to the tables.
A raffle featuring prizes generously donated by local businesses and individuals provided another opportunity for guests to support the cause. Attendees also took part in interactive trivia games and novelty challenges throughout the afternoon.
In one of the day’s highlights, guests competed to reveal the most unusual item carried in a handbag. Remarkably, last year’s winner took top honours once again; having carried dog food in her handbag last year, she secured the win this time with a set of false teeth. A ‘guess-the-number-of-lollies’ jar provided another chance for guests to test their estimating skills and contribute to the tally.
The branch was particularly grateful to receive a generous $1000 donation from St Mary’s Op Shop, making a substantial contribution toward its overall fundraising efforts.
Make-A-Wish East Gippsland branch president Dave Williams thanked everyone who attended and supported the event, noting the community’s ongoing commitment despite tough economic times.
“Every dollar raised helps us bring a little bit of hope, joy, and magic to children and families going through an incredibly difficult time,” Mr Williams said.
“We’re especially grateful to everyone who has continued to support us in the current financial climate. It really does make a huge difference.”
Mr Williams also highlighted the exceptional fundraising efforts of two students from Lucknow Primary School, who recently raised almost $2500 for Make-A-Wish by organising a sausage sizzle.
“Their generosity is a wonderful reminder that the power of a wish reaches well beyond the children who are waiting for one themselves,” Mr Williams said.
“These two students, like so many other young people in our community, understand that every child deserves moments of joy, hope and something special to look forward to – and they wanted to help make that possible for others. Their achievement is another wonderful example of the generosity and community spirit that continues to support the work of the East Gippsland volunteer branch.”
Thanks to the combined support of local businesses, community groups, schools, individuals and event attendees, the branch continues to raise essential funds to help Make-A-Wish Australia create life-changing moments for sick children and their families.
