Bairnsdale locals looking to kickstart a career in Australia’s booming renewable energy sector have been handed a unique opportunity, with electricity distributor AusNet launching a targeted investment in regional jobs.
As part of a $3 million statewide initiative, AusNet is offering nine three-year distribution traineeships across Victoria — including a local Access Planning role based right here in Bairnsdale.
The program aims to build the specialised technical skills needed to support Victoria’s transition to net zero, allowing successful candidates to live, learn and earn locally. Trainees will receive an $80,000 annual salary alongside hands-on, face-to-face industry training.
AusNet executive general manager distribution, Andrew Linnie, said the investment reflects the company’s commitment to strengthening regional communities and fostering a local workforce capable of powering the future.

“We are creating meaningful careers in our regional communities, building the skills needed for the energy transition, and helping Victoria meet its renewable energy and emissions targets.”
Over the three-year course, trainees will work alongside industry professionals while earning a nationally recognised Advanced Diploma of ESI Power Systems. Upon graduation, participants will have a clear, direct pathway into permanent roles
within the business.
While the Bairnsdale role focuses on Access Planning, other traineeships across the state cover Network Connections and Distribution Control and Operations.
Applicants must have completed year 12 by the end of 2026 with strong results in mathematics and science, hold a valid driver’s licence with access to a vehicle, possess unrestricted working rights in Australia, and be able to travel monthly for Melbourne-
based training blocks.
Diversity is a core focus of the recruitment drive, with AusNet actively encouraging women, First Nations people, and mature-aged candidates to apply.
