Victoria Police has boosted its marine rescue capabilities with the launch of its newest and largest vessel, VP03, which officially took to the water from Tuesday, August 11.
Senior leaders from Victoria Police and partner emergency agencies gathered at the Gippsland Water Police headquarters in Paynesville yesterday for an official ceremony to mark the boat’s entry into service.
The custom-made 18.6-metre-long catamaran is the largest and most durable vessel in Water Police history.
Powered by two turbo diesel engines, the high-speed vessel is designed for marine search and rescue operations, as well as land evacuations during coastal emergencies such as bushfires.
The vessel is built to withstand extreme sea conditions, with the capacity to remain at sea for multiple days.
It can accommodate six crew members and up to 16 passengers at any one time.
While regular patrols will focus on the Victorian coastline, Western Port, and Port Phillip Bay, VP03 is fully capable of deploying further offshore into the Tasman Sea and the Southern Ocean.
Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Libby Murphy emphasised the critical role of specialised equipment in emergency responses.
“Water Police and Search and Rescue squads play a critical role in major emergencies and rescues,” Deputy Commissioner Murphy said.
“To do this life-saving work they need the best equipment and that’s what VP03 delivers.
“It’s the biggest and most durable vessel of our fleet and will prove to be an invaluable resource when every second counts.”
Water Police and Search and Rescue Squad Inspector James Dalton noted the catamaran would significantly strengthen operations in challenging offshore environments.
“This new vessel will enhance our rescue capabilities in Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean,” Inspector Dalton said.
“When emergency strikes, we can now deploy more members, get there faster and stay for longer.
“The additional space means we can transport more passengers and carry more emergency equipment, which will no doubt save lives in a crisis.
“Our squads are highly capable and skilled to respond to all kinds of emergencies and rescues, and they now have the capability to do the best job possible.”
The addition of VP03 represents a significant upgrade to Victoria’s maritime emergency infrastructure, ensuring police and rescue personnel are better equipped to handle emergencies along the state’s rugged coastline.
