In a remarkable season turnaround, Swifts Creek are through to the Omeo netball grand final, defeating Buchan in a thrilling preliminary final at the Omeo Recreation Reserve.
The Demons languished on the bottom of the table through the first two rounds winless, before winning three of their final four rounds to sneak into the finals.
Last Saturday they held off the gallant Wilmas down the stretch, 47-44 further adding to the confidence gained over the last two months.
Buchan have held the mantle as the competition’s second best side all season, but that was just another late season challenge for Swifts Creek to conquer.
Buchan tested the Demons physically and mentally over four tough quarters, but with the steely resolve developed over the final rounds, Swifts Creek were able to capitalise on some vital turnovers and cease victory.
The Demons will now chase a fairytale victory over the invincible Omeo Benambra line-up, who are chasing a historic three-peat and have not been seriously challenged this season.
In “B” grade, Bruthen was too good for Lindenow South, winning 50-35, earning a chance at ultimate glory on their home court this week.
The Bulldogs defence worked hard, their ability to read the play and intercept a major factor in the increased opportunities for the grateful shooters at the opposite end.
This week’s opponent, Omeo Benambra watched on intently, thoughts focused seven days ahead.
Bruthen ran out easy winners in the 17 and under fixture, 25-10.
They were quickly in control of the match, having little maintaining a winning advantage in the second half.
If they can play like that again this weekend, they are more than capable of knocking off Lindenow South.
