There were mixed results for local boxers on last week’s card at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, as part of the Nikita Tszyu and Ben Mahoney showdown.
Stratford’s Max Reeves put on a polished display, scoring a TKO victory in the eighth round over New Zealander Oliver Frith.
Reeves took his record to 14 wins, one loss and one draw, and his current world ranking of 15 is set to improve.
Hitting the ring in splendid shape, Reeves was never seriously challenged, notching up another very impressive victory.
Bairnsdale’s Blake Wells was defeated by undefeated prospect Callum Peters (9-0, 8 KOs) in their IBF Pacific middleweight title bout.
The referee awarding the bout to Peters in the eighth round by TKO.
Peters boasts an impressive resume that includes a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and an appearance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and looks a feature world champion.
Peters unorthodox style was too much for the world No. 15, with a series of devastating body blows leaving Wells bruised and beaten across eight punishing rounds, Wells doing well to remain standing.
The onslaught began in the first round, as the pair exchanged heavy blows, but it didn’t take long for Peters to take the fight by the throat, with repeated blows to the liver across the second, third and fourth rounds leaving Wells struggling to stay on his feet.
Boxing legend, Danny Green who was commentating the fight, was impressed by Peters.
“That is sickening stuff, I’m glad Callum Peters wasn’t around in my weight division. He is a nightmare,” Green said.
“Wells has really impressed me with his toughness, he’s a warrior, but this kid is an absolute demon.”
