In East Gippsland Gallery’s west gallery is the returning South East NOW 2024 exhibition.
This hugely popular group show of Koorie artists is back and includes work by Leann J. Edwards, Frances Harrison, Alfie Hudson, Alice Ann Pepper, Ronald Edwards Pepper, Chris Mongta, Patricia Pittman, Alan Solomon and Ray Thomas.
This exhibition also includes school workshops, tours and artist talks with exhibiting artist Bradley Brown and Sarah Brown. In the east gallery is Bradley Brown’s exhibition, Warriors.
Bradley is a proud Gunaikurnai, Bidawal, Gunditjmara artist and father living and working in Bairnsdale.
His passion is helping others, encouraging and teaching young people, especially Aboriginal kids, respecting his Aboriginal culture and raising his family in the right way.
“I have a strong passion for painting and telling my stories because it keeps me busy and is important culturally,” Bradley said.
In 2023 Bradley won the East Gippsland Art Gallery Small Artwork prize out of a field of over 400 entrants, for his work, Clothed in Respect and Unity, wood-burning and acrylic on wood.
In the sideshow and vault gallery spaces are Jennifer Mullett and Ben Pender.
Jennifer Mullett is the daughter of Uncle Albert Mullett, and Aunty Rachel Mullett and the mother of Ben Pender.
Jennifer’s work is a reconnection to personal memories and experiences and a representation of identity that explores the symbolism used in paintings, artefacts and storytelling of the Gunaikurnai, Bidawal and Ngarigu (Monaro) peoples.
Jennifer’s work is held in public galleries and museums, including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria and Koorie Heritage Trust, Melbourne.
There will be a special opening event at 5.30 pm on Friday, June 21, 2024.
All are welcome and entry is free. Exhibitions run until Saturday, July 27, 2024.
