The fourth East Gippsland Winter Festival kicked off in spectacular fashion last weekend with Bruthen’s Medieval Festival opening the doors to a huge audience last Saturday.
The festival officially kicked off last Friday night with a launch party at the Slipway Sheds in Lakes Entrance, followed by the Winter Solstice Sunrise Swim in Cunningham Arm, which attracted more than 100 brave souls, but Bruthen was where the excitement centred on the opening weekend of the month-long event.
Always an annual highlight of the festival, Saturday afternoon saw the Bruthen Medieval Festival bigger and better than ever, with 2000 in attendance.
With the rain cleared, the crowds converged to enjoy thrilling sword fights, bonfires, lively music, medieval costumes and fireside feasting.
The fun didn’t stop there, with events ranging from sold out high-country long lunches, lantern making workshops, live music performances from renowned Australian singers, sourdough baking classes, gin masterclasses, art walks and so much more, taking place over the weekend.
Founder of the festival, Adam Bloem, was elated by the success of the opening weekend and what is shaping up to be a successful fourth festival.
“Our creative community have pulled out all stops to make 2024 more magical than ever,” he said.
“They know this year more than ever, everyone needs some good free fun and a winter full of experiences to district from the day to day pressures many households are feeling.
“Our school holiday events are amazing value (many free) for families and there are still some tickets left to the adult only long lunches, dinners and gigs.”
