The East Gippsland Winter Festival is featuring a fabulous family event in Swifts Creek at the Poets Walk and Great Alpine Gallery called Dance of the Water Dragon.
The event kicks off on Friday, July 5, at 2pm at the Poets Walk with an afternoon of fun and creative family activities including free lantern making and a talk by ecologist Laura Owen on the wildlife in the Tambo River area.
At 5.30pm a lantern parade will head to the gallery led by a giant handmade East Gippsland Water Dragon lantern.
Then at the gallery an immersive sound-scape and video projection will transport the viewers into a creative journey inspired by the sights and sounds of the river.
“The way I worked on this project was to gather sounds from the environment, mainly river sounds as well as underwater,” sound-scape artist for the project, Peter Jones, said.
“The actual soundscape is also interactive responding to the audience.”
This will be complemented by a video projection on the walls and ceilings of the gallery created by Anne Richardson and artworks as part of an ongoing exhibition.
The whole project has been a collaboration between artists and community culminating in a wonderful art experience on the stunning Great Alpine Road as part of the East Gippsland Winter Festival.
An initiative of artists of the Great Alpine Gallery, the project has been generously supported by the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund through Regional Arts Australia and Regional Arts Victoria, Gippsland Community Foundation, East Gippsland Shire Council, the workshops by Vic Health and the ecology survey and talk by Swifts Creek Ensay Landcare Group.
