Following a successful rowing season, Bairnsdale’s own Lynne Broad, was recently named the Rowing Victoria Club Person of the Year.
This award acknowledges Lynne as an outstanding leader and club person who demonstrates respect, initiative and personal commitment to the club and rowing across Victoria.
She was also named Bairnsdale Rowing Club female rower of the year.
Lynne was successful at the masters state championships in mid May, and then represented Victoria in the masters interstate women’s coxed eight at the 2019 Australian masters rowing championships at Champion Lakes Regatta Centre, Perth, Western Australia.
From May 22 to 25, Lynne competed in 13 races including the Victorian women’s coxed eight, which finished fourth in a field of seven.
Lynne was successful in several other events, rowing in composite crews with members of clubs from all over Australia.
Lynne won gold in a women’s G coxed eight, silver in the women’s D coxed four and mixed F coxless quadruple scull and bronze in the women’s E coxed eight, with solid results in other events.
One of the highlights for Lynne in the past season was when she competed in a mixed masters eight with students from Murdoch University Western Australia in the 16 kilometre Perth to Fremantle Head Race. They finished third in their division.
Lynne encourages anyone interested in rowing to come to one of Bairnsdale Rowing Club’s learn to row days.
“Rowing is an awesome sport,” Lynne said.
“It challenges you physically and mentally and is fantastic exercise that caters for all ages and abilities. You get to meet lots of interesting people and enjoy our beautiful waterways.
“I would recommend it to everybody and you never know till you have a row.”
Lynne is now looking forward to the 2019/20 rowing season, which commences with longer distance time trials in October with Bairnsdale Rowing Club’s annual regatta in the middle of the month.
