East Gippslanders are among increasing numbers of citizens around the world alarmed by the impacts of global warming currently unfolding and threatening the planet’s future safety, according to East Gippsland Climate Action Network.
The group’s frustration and disappointment at government inaction has prompted a groundswell of campaigning to bring the climate crisis to the fore and last Friday’s protest and die-in in Bairnsdale’s Nicholson Street Mall was used as a short and sharp reminder to draw attention to the urgency of the situation, according to group spokesperson, Ro Gooch.
“For decades scientists have been warning that what we are experiencing is not normal climate cycles; it is a catastrophic change in greenhouse gas levels that will spell disaster for the world’s species including us,” Ro said.
“Australia’s per capita contribution to drastically increasing carbon emissions is among the highest in the world. They say that we are on target to meet our Paris commitments but how can this be when our emissions continue to rise?
“Advice to our government from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development is that we will not achieve the Paris target without intensified mitigation efforts.”
The East Gippsland Climate Action Network, along with many other groups around the world, says it has run out of patience and is taking action now.
