Trail riders brave poor weather

by Bairnsdale Advertiser

in Local News

The June ride for the Tambo Upper Trail Riding Club was led by Sue Cullinan at Mount Taylor.
Following a week of horrible weather, 16 hardy riders and horses headed out for the day. Wet weather gear was the choice of attire, however, Mother Nature was on the side of the riders. The rain held off for the riders to enjoy a warming fire at the lunch break beside Bark Bucket Creek in Long Gully.
Following lunch, with the weather closing in, it was decided to take the fastest route back to base. As the group rode in the rain came down. The horses were rugged up, watered and fed while the riders enjoyed afternoon tea with another fire to enjoy.
Brittney Philpotts was welcomed back to the club after a long break while studying and working. She made quite an impression on her lovely grey quarter-horse mare, Harmony.
Clare Howson travelled from Sale to join in on her lovely bay pony Remi. This is a new area for Clare to ride in and she was very impressed with the diverse countryside and bush tracks.
Julie Reading and Lyn King were also prepared to brave the weather and made the trip up from Briagolong to participate.
The next ride for the Tambo Upper Trail Riding Club will be led by Gill Renshaw on Sunday, July 21. The area is literally Gill’s backyard, she can be found out riding these tracks most days.
The ride will leave from the corner of Pipe Dump Road and Brooks Road, Bruthen. The route will include some hill work so horses will need a reasonable level of fitness. However, breaks will be taken for horses as necessary. There will be a variety of terrain including single tracks, gullies and sections of bush.
A compulsory unmounted muster will be held at 9.45am. Participants should arrive early enough to saddle up prior the muster. Ride out time will be 10am sharp with a saddlebag lunch and return to the floats by 2.30pm.
To reach the starting point travel north through Bruthen on the Great Alpine Road. Go past the Bruthen Cemetery and then look for the next left turn, McLeans Road.
Do not stop at the walking trails car park.
Continue straight ahead on Pipe Dump Road to the intersection with Brooks Road.
Tambo Upper trail rides are held in various locations on the third Sunday of every month. New members are always welcome.
