The Rotary Club of Mitchell River was pleased to have local identity Cheryl Brooks as its guest speaker at a recent meeting.
Cheryl, who has been the president of the Bairnsdale and District Past Trained Nurses and Associates for many years, gave an interesting, and at times humorous, account of her years of training and service at the Bairnsdale hospital.
The group is made up of nurses who trained and worked at the Bairnsdale hospital when the training of nurses was seen as an integral part of the hospital’s function within the community.
It was a unanimous decision recently taken by the group members to disband the association due to less members, for many reasons, being unable to attend the meetings.
The funds accumulated by the group over the years, mostly from the annual $5 membership, have been distributed to three local community causes being: a gift to the hospital in the form of a home hospital bed for special purpose/palliative care patients, the local Make a Wish Foundation and Rotary Centenary House.
