Representatives from local agencies and community members came together recently for an afternoon exploring the questions around keeping safe in East Gippsland as impacts of a changing climate are felt.
Hosted by volunteers from East Gippsland Climate Action Network (EGCAN), those present considered exposures, sensitivities and assets in the local setting. Participants shared ideas, experiences and knowledge focussing on those three
areas as well as the capacity for adaptation to a heating climate.
The workshop at the Eagle Point Foreshore Hub, was facilitated by Vicki and Alee from Friends of the Earth, and proved to be successful in bringing together concerns and positives from a number of sectors.
“We acknowledge that East Gippsland covers a very large area, but small groups and neighbourhoods having more conversations will increase people’s understanding of local risks around climate impacts.
“Ultimately we hope people will become more prepared and connected,” Nola Kelly, one of the organisers from EGCAN, said.
Further stages in EGCAN’s Climate Ready Communities project are planned, but organisers were heartened by the willingness of attendees to work together on this important topic.
