The East Gippsland United under 13s final game of the Latrobe Valley Soccer League home and away season against the Monash Wolves ended in a nil-all draw, with the Eagles deciding to mix things up by switching positions.
Defensive players moved up to the attack, while the usual attackers held the line in defence.
Even the Eagles’ goalkeeper got in on the fun, playing his first game as a striker.
The first half was a whirlwind with both teams enjoying the match and creating chances to score, though neither side managed to find the net.
The Eagles’ makeshift defence quickly gained a new appreciation for their teammates who usually defend each week.
The second half was highlighted by the Eagles’ stand-in goalkeeper, who provided plenty of laughs — and a bit of stress for his coaches — with his confident and daring runs up the pitch, leaving his goal wide open and forcing him to sprint back as Monash players urged each other to shoot into the empty net.
It was clear he enjoyed his time as the keeper.
Player of the match went to Jackson Cheesley for his awesome performance as a striker.
Normally the team’s goalkeeper, he played a great game up front, exceeding all expectations and looking right at home.
Credit to Monash for being great sports, making this a memorable game to close out the season.
The under 15 Eagles took a few minutes to warm up against Traralgon Red with a slow start.
This didn’t last long with four goals kicked in the first 15 minutes by the Eagles, with a hat-trick for Cooper Claridge in the first half.
Taking advantage of the defence, players passed back quite frequently to switch up and settle play.
The Eagles had multiple shots at goal in the first half taking advantage with a 7-0 lead at half time.
Switching the team up in the second half gave the defenders the chance to play forward, scoring three goals between them.
Keeper Reagan Nash got his opportunity to kick two goals in a row when he was put into attack.
Goals were shared among the team with six different goal scorers, with the final score 10–0 to the Eagles.
This week the men have a tough task as they face off against Fortuna in the Battle of Britain semi finals.
The under 13s have the week off before starting their cup rounds while the under 15s play Traralgon City White away.
