Lucky escape

23 June 2020
in Local News

A Bairnsdale man had a lucky escape after a vehicle ploughed into his front fence, missing his bedroom window, where he was sleeping.

Caleb Chippindall was sound asleep in his unit, on Anderson Street, in the early hours of June 16 when he was rudely awoken by the roar of an engine and a massive bang at 3am.

“I jumped out of bed and looked out the window and there were people screaming and yelling,” Mr Chippindall said.

He says two women in the vehicle “legged it” leaving a female passenger in the front of the vehicle.

“Police must have been following because they turned up 30 seconds later,” Mr Chippindall told the Advertiser.

He says a teenage girl ran off but police reportedly managed to capture the driver as she fled from the scene.

“She was screaming that she had left her two-year-old son at home,” Mr Chippindall said.

Police have confirmed the driver of the vehicle was a 21-year-old who was on her learners permit.

The front seat passenger, a 51-year-old woman, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police told the Advertiser they were not in pursuit of the Holden Commodore.

“Definitely not, we don’t do that these days,” a police spokesman said.

Mr Chippindall said he found it difficult to go back to sleep after the accident and is now considering moving his bed away from the window.

“The car could have ended up in my bedroom if the brick fence hadn’t of been there.”

Mr Chippindall said had the car veered a foot to the left it would have killed the occupants because it would have hit the electrical transformer box and electrocuted them”.
