The Paynesville Neighbourhood Centre (PNC) hosted a morning tea last Thursday, with the day raising funds for an important cause, the McGrath Foundation.
The total amount raised from the event was an impressive $4064.
Held at the Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club, the Pink Morning Tea saw ladies in all shades of pink turn out for a morning of raffles, cups of tea and finger food.
In previous years, the PNC had held a Biggest Morning Tea, but this year decided to change it up for the first time.
The change also serves as a tribute to past coordinator, Moira McEwan, who sadly passed away in February this year.
“Her own presence was beautiful, she just had that thing about her,” Kate Tatchell said.
Kate explained the event would also address the need for more specialists in East Gippsland.
“Cancer numbers are growing in East Gippsland, so we need more specialists, more doctors and more breast care nurses,” she said.
Manager of the Paynesville Neighbourhood Centre, Julia Fitz-Gerald, explained the origins of the McGrath Foundation.
“Many of you will have heard of Jane
McGrath, the late wife of Australian
cricketing great, Glenn McGrath and the co-founder of the McGrath Foundation,” Julia said.
“Jane’s public experience with breast cancer and the impact of her own breast care nurse set her commitment and the mission for the foundation: to ensure that every family experiencing breast cancer would have access to a breast care nurse no matter where they lived – for free.
“Jane passed away in 2008, having secured funding for 50 McGrath Breast Care Nurses and with the Foundation set to carry on her mission.”
The money raised for the McGrath Foundation helps to fund McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities right across Australia and invest in their professional development to ensure people with breast cancer receive the highest standard of care.
