The East Gippsland Historical Society wished to honour four of its members and express its gratitude for their service by awarding them life membership at the annual general meeting held on July 27, 2024.
Many of our members dedicate their time to supporting the running of the Historical Society’s Museum over many years and are often an unheralded group who play a crucial role in maintaining and promoting the rich tapestry
of our local history and heritage.
Their commitment extends beyond the mere act of membership; it is a lifelong pledge to safeguard and celebrate the historical narratives that shape our community.
A life member of a historical society is someone who has made a significant and lasting commitment to the organisation.
The committee has been pleased to award life memberships to Ian Hollingsworth and Alan Howden who have both each contributed to the society for approximately 20 years or more.
The committee has also awarded life membership and acknowledges the significant contribution of time and dedication to the society by Paula Stuart, who joined in 1994, and Neil Cox who joined the society prior to 1982. Combined these members have given over 115 years of service to the society.
Their contribution to the society’s activities has been in various forms, from maintaining the Historical Society’s collections, research requests, serving on the Committee of Management and volunteering their time and expertise on days the museum is open to the public.
They are enthusiasts of local history, with deep knowledge of our community’s people and past, their contribution has helped build a repository of knowledge and resources.
The society hopes that for these new life members, the recognition is a testament to their dedication and a reflection of their deep-rooted love for history.
It also serves to inspire others to consider the ways in which they too can contribute to the preservation of our collective past.
