After an intense rehearsal process over the past four months, the cast and crew of Bairnsdale Production Line Theatre Company’s Death of a Salesman are ready to open this Friday at the Forge Theatre.
Exploring complex, traumatic themes about failing to achieve the Great American Dream and the time and energy wasted chasing it, Death of a Salesman is considered one of the best American plays of the 20th century.
When success and riches fail to materialise by the end of Willy Loman’s sales career, he sees only one way left to make good on his worth to wife Linda and sons Biff and Happy – cashing in on his life insurance.
While Linda and his sons try desperately to break through Willy’s regression to times past, he heads further into despair and delusion, determined to make things right the only way he thinks he can.
“It’s a powerful story that exposes one man’s relentless pursuit for success, his subsequent derailing, and the everlasting impact this leaves on all those who love him,” production manager, Jayne Baylis, said.
“A lot of the themes highlighted are still decidedly relevant in today’s society, and will no doubt evoke strong emotions from our audiences.
“I encourage everyone to support their local theatre community and see just how wonderfully talented this cast is. I am enormously proud of the work put in by them and the production team, who have gone above and beyond to bring this iconic play to life for the Forge Theatre stage.
“Theatre goers attending on opening night can enjoy a complimentary glass of sparkling wine and supper provided by dedicated Production Line sponsor, New Leaf Cafe.
“A portion of the profits from this performance will also be donated to local charity St Vincent de Paul Assistance Centre Bairnsdale. This wonderful organisation provides assistance and support for those facing hardship and we are delighted to do our bit to help them out.”
Death of a Salesman opens on Friday, October 18, for a total of six performances over two weekends, concluding on Sunday, October 27. More information can be found on the Production Line website and Facebook page, as well as the Forge Theatre and Arts Hub website.
Please note that Death of a Salesman contains themes of self-harm, mental illness and emotional distress, and is recommended for ages 16+.
