Bairnsdale Tennis Club’s Corporate Tennis season kicked off last Friday night in perfect conditions, eight teams doing battle in a social environment.
The bar was open and the barbecue smoking as East Gippsland Water, Randoms, Todd Plumbing Supplies, Bulmer Farms, Slates Cleaning, Elliott’s Landscape and Design, Lindenow Primary School and East Gippsland Catchment Authority competed.
Luke and Richard were missing from the East Gippsland Water team, but Scott and Jen stepped in and ended the night victorious over the newly formed Randoms.
Luke and Ishaka from the Randoms battled hard against the EG Water pairing of Rob and Jen, but the superior communication of Rob and Jen came out on top.
East Gippsland Catchment Authority came up against the seasoned Lindenow Primary School team led by Reg, who were comfortable winners.
In a rare but always eventful appearance for the Lindenow team, Adam Cairns stepped onto the court with his usual “all-or-nothing” energy.
The scoreboard already read 5-0 in his favour but that didn’t stop him from going full throttle. With the intensity of a grand slam final, Adam lunged for every ball like his life depended on it, driving shots right on the line and throwing himself into each rally.
At one point, in a heroic dive for an impossible return, things took a wild turn, he skidded across the court and left a bit of himself behind, leaving his blood on the court, but he gained the respect of his colleagues.
The early frontrunners for the trophy are Todd Plumbing Supplies and Lindenow, with teams coming away from the night with a perfect score winning six sets, closely followed by Slates Cleaning and East Gippsland Water who cleaned up with five sets each.
In this week’s games, East Gippsland Water takes on Lindenow Primary School, Todd Plumbing Supplies plays the Randoms, Elliott’s Landscape and Design is opposed to Bulmers Farms, while East Gippsland Catchment Authority matches up against Slates Cleaning.
