Howitt Park broke through for its first victory of the season in midweek pennant defeating a gallant Heyfield. The decisive rink was led by William Cornwall (pictured), who skipped his four home 29-18. (PS)

After two rounds of the Gippsland Bowls Region midweek pennant competition, Lakes Entrance and Sale remain the two unbeaten entities in the premier division.

Defending champion Lakes Entrance was too good at home for Paynesville, winning 68-52, with Michael Bratt, Eric Spence, Wallace Mason and Kevin Brown leading the way, 29-17 winners.

Maurice Carroll, Margaret Brandhoj, Bill Rowley and Joanne Martin just as impressive winning 22-18, while Mike McKay, Jim Northe, Jenny and Kevin Dowie drew with Paynesville’s Wilma Fowden, Jenny Easton, Joe Cilauro and Margery Nathan.

Maffra hosted the traditional Sale verses Maffra clash, but it was the visitors who won two of the rinks and went home with the points, 70-57 victors.

The consistent Gail McKenzie and her teammates Pamela Carter, Michael Dowd and Neal Taylor, were impressive winners, 29-18, as were Bruce Melrose, Margaret Scenery, Raymond Kennedy and Dennis Young, 22-12.

Laurence Cameron, Frederick Morgan, Glenn Conduit and John Spencer got a rink back for Maffra, playing some outstanding late ends, winning a tight contest 27-19.

Howitt Park opened its account for the season despite only winning one rink at home against Heyfield, the Parkers home 62-57 in a contest that fluctuated from end-to-end.

The decisive victory of the Parkers came from Carla Proud, Dick Meadows, Heather and William Cornwall, 29-18, pivotal in the end result.

Good performers for Heyfield were Sandra Holmes, Glenda Pawley, Barry Anderson, Shane Kelly (20-18), and Chris Sherrin, Ian Barbour, Charlie Wojcinski and Bert Middlehuis (24-15).

Stratford was victorious for the first time in this campaign, cleaning sweeping Bairnsdale at home 69-45, in the process moving into third place on the ladder.

Carmel Boyd, Desmond Phillips, Jason White and Michael Dee were 14-shot winners with June Richardson, Michael Benson, Kirstie White and Jan Morton saving their best for the final few ends in a 21-15 victory.

Denis Downey, Anne Renehan, Wayne Marsden and Ian Johns clinched the final rink 23-19.

After a slow start to the season, Stratford looks like being one of the sides to watch in the coming weeks, with no shortage of talent in their line-up.
