One of the recent additions to the Bairnsdale Cricket Association “A” grade competition, Metung Swan Reach, have scored its second win for the season and now sits two points outside the top four.
Playing at home, the Swans bowled Wy Yung out for 140 in quest of 195 for victory, leaving the Tigers languishing in seventh place on the ladder.
The Tigers resumed at 3/34 and momentum changed throughout a tense couple of hours, before Charlie Thompson (4/19) mopped up the final three wickets without the Tigers adding a run.
Harry Forbes (12) and Ben Saxon (25) were cautious early and when Thompson bowled Saxon reverting the score to 5/57, the end looked near for Wy Yung.
Tigers skipper Steve Bertino (9) and Todd Murray (55) worked hard to get the Tigers back into the contest and just when the game looked to be going back their way, last week’s wrecker Royce Colgrave had Bertino caught behind, Wy Yung 6/117.
Colgrave had a superb match picking up 5/48 from 18 well controlled overs.
Murray faced 122 balls and hit six boundaries and two maximums. The Tigers always looked capable of making the target when he was at the crease.
Unfortunately he was adjudged leg before wicket, giving Colgrave five for the match, and it only took Thompson two overs to remove Damian Vicary for 15 and both Shaun Malcom and Caleb Ellett for ducks.
The Swans banked six vital points for hard fought win, as they continue to defy the odds and be competitive in the sojourn into top grade cricket.
Wy Yung may live to rue this loss as it was six vital points it would have banked on gaining when the redraw was done a couple of weeks ago.
