A year 11 student from Eagle Point, Amelie Claringbold, is celebrating a phenomenal year as Melbourne Theatre Company youth ambassador and a participant in the National Institute of Dramatic Art’s (NIDA) Young Actors Studio in Melbourne.
Amelie describes each role as “exceptional and a once in a lifetime opportunity,” to access knowledge, gain invaluable skills and experience, make industry connections and meet with like-minded young people.
They are regarded as highly prestigious and coveted opportunities in the fields of theatre and the dramatic arts for young people.
Selection is highly competitive and the result of applications and auditions across the state.
Melbourne Theatre Company’s youth ambassador program recognises students who show significant potential and dedication in the field of theatre and is a testament to Amelie’s hard work, passion and the promise she holds as a future leader in the arts.
As a youth ambassador, Amelie has embarked on a year-long extension program for year 11 students which offers insight into the world of professional theatre.
The role requires significant commitment and dedication.
Youth ambassadors travel once a month to Melbourne to meet with Melbourne Theatre Company staff and artists to extend their knowledge and experience by attending Melbourne Theatre Company productions and sharing their experiences and responses to theatre with peers.
It is also a leadership role which has two functions; to act as a youth representative within the company, and to act as an advocate for Melbourne Theatre Company within school and social communities.
“It is an honour and a privilege to be a youth ambassador,” Amelie said.
“I am passionate about Melbourne Theatre Company and the opportunities it provides to young people across the state and in particular, to students in regional Victoria.”
Amelie has displayed exceptional talent and promise in being selected for several Melbourne Theatre Company Scholarships: The Betty Amsden Youth Scholarship, Careers Week and this year’s youth ambassador program.
She credits Melbourne Theatre Company with changing her life.
“It has been simply cathartic,” Amelie said.
“As a direct result of my experiences with Melbourne Theatre Company, I have discovered my love for the theatre and for the dramatic arts and know this is where I want to be.
“My educational and career objectives are to work in these fields; in particular, in the theatre.
“Without Melbourne Theatre Company, none of this would have been possible.”
Melbourne Theatre Company’s Education Hub also supports students like Amelie who are pursuing theatre and drama studies for VCE.
“Melbourne Theatre Company provides incredible educational resources to students across the State including resource information on its Productions and Production Roles in theatre,” Amelie said.
In addition to her role as Melbourne Theatre Company Youth Ambassador, Amelie successfully auditioned for NIDA’s Young Actors Studio at the beginning of this year, embarking on a rigorous year-long intensive acting program, with Australia’s most prestigious Drama School.
“This programme has enabled me to develop my acting skills and knowledge,” Amelie said.
The course also prepares students for auditions in the industry and with applications for tertiary study not only at NIDA in Sydney but also to drama schools and tertiary institutions across the country and overseas.
“I cannot put a price on these incredible opportunities,” Amelie said.
“They have provided me with opportunities I could only dream of and have laid the foundations for my tertiary studies and career goals. I am just so grateful.
“As one of my NIDA tutors said, “The best actors are the hard-working actors” and that it the motto I live by.
“From here, it is study, headshots, agents and auditions.”
Amelie urges people to explore theatre; whether it be attending one of Melbourne Theatre Company’s 2025 productions or joining in local theatre productions, connecting with like-minded people and experiencing the wonder of the theatre.
“You never know where it might lead and what incredible friendships you might make,” she said.
“In addition, participation in the arts allows you to develop incredible skills including: leadership, collaboration, teamwork, communication, public speaking, presentation, organisation and time-management skills as well as helping to develop confidence, and setting clear goals for the future.”
Amelie encourages students who are interested in theatre and drama to pursue their dreams and not be discouraged by distance or perceived lack of access to opportunities.
“There are many wonderful opportunities out there,” she said.
“Do your research and have a go. Put yourself out there and see what happens. Don’t give up on your dream of working in the arts.
“You never know what incredible opportunities and experiences await you.”
