The Rotary Club of Bairnsdale Sunrise was encouraged by the enthusiasm shown by a wide range of the community members for their proposed bike/mobility scooter track in Eastwood recently.
Rotarians set up their marque in Tulaba Park next the Lucknow Primary School last Wednesday where the proposed track is to be built. They provided information and received feedback for the proposed track from children, teachers and interested community members.
The feedback from the community was positive indeed. The track will be among the beautiful trees in the park and conveniently located near Lucknow Primary School, kindergarten and childcare centre as well as near Eastwood Retirement Village.
It is also adjacent to the new adventure playground and toilets provided by the East Gippsland Shire.
The goal of this project is to teach children to safely ride bikes and also for older adults to gain confidence using mobility scooters. Local children learning about the road rules and signs early is anticipated could assist in the reduction of accidents.
The other goal is for more children to encourage families to ride together along East Gippsland’s wonderful bike tracks. If more children feel confident on their bikes, more may ride regularly to school. This would then reduce the number of cars on roads and around schools and improve children’s fitness.
This part of the project has been sponsored with funds from the East Gippsland Shire Community Grants. If this community engagement is successful, the
Rotary Club of Bairnsdale Sunrise will engage Crossco Consulting using the remainder of the grant funds to do the detailed design of the facility.
Once the design is approved by East Gippsland Shire Council, Rotary would then look to the community to assist them with sponsorship to build the track.
