The recent September ride for the Tambo Upper Trail Riding Club was in the Mount Alfred State Forest.
Sixteen riders braved the blustery wet weather to saddle up for a day riding in the bush. The skies cleared in time for Tony Burgess to lead the group out.
The route featured shaded gullies, open bush and a couple of rocky and steep climbs that kept the horses focused on the job.
Lunch gave the horses the opportunity to have a pick of grass and recover from the hills. The sun finally broke through the clouds and warmed the riders. They then remounted and made their way through lovely open bush back to Tony’s property.
On returning to the floats the horses were tended to firstly before the riders enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea. Floats were loaded and the group headed off home after a challenging and satisfying day.
The next ride on Sunday, October 20, is the much-anticipated Briagolong ride which was unfortunately cancelled last year due to a bushfire in the area. It will be led by Lyn King and Julie Reading from Lyn’s property at 10 Coopers Road, Briagolong.
The ride is classified medium to hard, horses will need to have a reasonable level of fitness as there are a number of steep hills.
Horses need to be shod or booted due to rocky terrain. The riders will attend a pre-ride muster at 9.45am before heading out for the day. Please bring a saddlebag lunch.
10 Coopers Road can be reached from the east by turning off the Briagolong-Stockdale Road onto Coopers Rd and following it all the way to the other end, the road is shorter but is gravel and can be rough.
Alternatively, to stay on bitumen go to through Briagolong on Freestone Creek Road and the property is first on the right once you reach Coopers Road.
Tambo rides are held on the third Sunday of every month and are suitable for most standards. Visitors are welcome and juniors are also encouraged but must be accompanied by a guardian and able to ride independently.
