Fire season arrives

Fire season arrives

Bushfire season has reared its ugly head already.

Hot, humid and stormy conditions from Thursday through to Saturday evening has sparked a number of small blazes in the East Gippsland caused by lighting strikes, particularly in the far east.

Yesterday a fire north of Deptford covering four hectares was brought under control by seven response vehicles, while a 2.5-hectare blaze closer to Deptford was brought under control on Saturday night.

At time of going to print yesterday, a two-hectare bushfire was not yet under control near Timbarra. While it was of no threat to nearby residents, they were informed to stay on alert.

There were also two fires being responded to 13km and 23km east and two 8.5km and 20km north-east of Cann River, and three separate smaller fires in the Combienbar area none of which were under control.

Cooling weather yesterday morning, including showers, was helping fire fighters extinguish some of the blazes.
