After 18 years the Nowa Nowa Men’s Choir is still hitting the right note.

For a choir that started at a buck’s night in Nowa Nowa, the Nowa Nowa Men’s Choir has grown to one of the most wellknown choirs in the region, performing a number of gigs a year.

Leading musician, Andrew Stuivenberg, has been a part of the choir for 10 years and says it is just a bunch of mates having a good time while they share the passion of music.

“A few of the guys at that buck’s party said ‘why don’t we have a sing?’ and it just kept going from there,” he said.

“The choir is all about the good times.

“Musical perfection is an unattainable goal, we have no delusions of grandeur and the fact that some people like what we do is very nice.

“The goal for us is to create music and have a good time doing it.”

The Nowa Nowa Men’s Choir has roughly 20 members who range from mid 50s through to mid 80s and meet every week at Wyanga Park Winery.

“When our music comes together it’s magic,” he said.

“When it doesn’t it’s hysterical for us and there are a couple of members who do occasionally stuff things up but that isn’t a problem because perfection is not the gain; I would like it to be, but it’s never going to be.

“It’s all about having fun as a group of mates.”

This Sunday the Nowa Nowa Men’s Choir will perform at the 24th annual Choral Festival at St Mary’s Church Hall, which the choir is looking forward to.

“The audience usually loves us there, which is always a good thing,“ he said.

“They always put us on last because our rough approach is a bit of a contrast to the others that have worked really hard.

“It just works for us.

“We have performed there ever since I’ve been part of the choir and it’s always a really good time.”

The Choral Festival will feature 10 choirs across two sets between 2 and 3pm and 3.30 and 4.30pm.
