The Newlands Singers have have risen from the ashes and reformed as the Phoenix Singers.
After the departure of the director, who it has been difficult to replace, the group has a new choir director and accompanist.
Kim Green, the director of the Bairnsdale Secondary College music program, with extensive music qualifications, has agreed to take the choir. Her choir experience includes more than 30 years as part of the Ashton Smith Singers (Melbourne) that sang with the Australian Pops Orchestra for many years.
Julie Trewin, who has previous choir experience and is currently the accompanist at the Uniting Church, has agreed to accompany the choir. The group is fortunate to gain an accompanist of her calibre.
A nucleus of the former choir will complement new singers. The singers will meet weekly for the school terms at the Hub in Bairnsdale and has decided to keep evening meetings so that working and younger people can access the joy of singing in a choir. The choir is mixed and welcomes a range of voices with suitable songs and music chosen by the director to cater for the choir’s abilities.
An information evening will be held at 7pm on Thursday, April 17, at the Hub in Dalmahoy Street, Bairnsdale. The group will especially welcome interested new or prospective members.
