It certainly was an interesting few days for Echo Bend’s first ‘Star Party’ event, which took place on the weekend of March
28 to 31.
The Astronomical Society of Victoria, Latrobe Valley Astronomical Society and the Mornington Peninsula Astronomical Society braved the weather conditions and put on a great weekend for all to enjoy.
Campers arrived on the Friday, a little low in numbers, which was to be expected due to the weather forecast for the region, showers for both Saturday and Sunday.
It was a lovely sunny day on the Friday for their arrival with people traveling from all different directions, some from city areas, others from not too far places such as Leongatha, Warragul, and others from a little closer, like Maffra, Sale and Bairnsdale.
All were excited to be able to set up camp in a beautiful, lush green setting, some in tents, caravans or some hired the on-site vans available.
Telescopes were all set in place
and it was time to relax before the night viewing.
All were able to mix with different knowledgeable people, comparing and sharing devices and learning new things all the time. Although a cloud cover was in the sky for most of the evening, there were excited times when all could see the stars.
It was measured to be one of
the darkest skies, which is ideal for star viewing.
Saturday once again was mostly wet, but not cold. A lot ventured into the nearby National Park, enjoying the bush surrounding them.
They then spent the evening gathered around the large open fire pit enjoying great food and sweets provided by the local Guac-On Mexican Food Van.
Most had put their telescopes away with the threatening weather but while having dinner the stars did appear for a short time.
Sunday proved to be very wet with most deciding to go home as they had travelled from far distances.
The remaining dedicated campers explored the area, visiting
the Mitchel River old weir site, Dargo and the new High Country
Hooch Distillery.
All are looking forward to
visiting again soon with family and friends and Echo Bend Camping
Park is excited too as this will be an annual event.
