Bairnsdale Croquet Club ran a successful doubles tournament last weekend with 32 players from across the region playing some competitive matches before the winners were finalised.
The event attracted players from Mornington, Belmont, Lakes Entrance, Sale, Traralgon, Rosebud, Sorrento, Morwell, Drouin, Orbost and Wonthaggi.
The Traralgon husband and wife combination of Shane and Sue Downie prevailed in section one after winning all of their seven matches, with a hoop score of plus 25.
Runners-up were Belmont’s Steve Podolak and Judy Anderson who scored five wins and two losses, with a hoop score of plus seven.
Section two was dominated by Sale players with another husband and wife pairing, Colin and Nellie Coomber, also going through unbeaten, recording seven wins and a plus 18 hoop score.
The runners-up were the popular pairing of Wilma Freeman and Betty Clissold, with five wins, two losses and a plus 11 hoop score.
The congenial tournament atmosphere, the great catering and the smooth running of the event on the well prepared lawns has ensured that many of the players are planning to return for club’s 19 Hoop Level Singles event on June 28-29.
Bairnsdale Croquet Club was delighted with how the event ran and plans are already underway to make next year’s event, bigger and better.
