In the wake of the devastating 2019/20 bushfires, a critical initiative was born — Gippsland Youth.
Established in 2022 through bushfire recovery funding, this outreach service has been a beacon of hope for young people across East Gippsland and Wellington. It provides more than just support — it offers connection, opportunity, and a sense of belonging.
In 2025, Gippsland Youth secured a permanent home in the heart of Bairnsdale — the old fire station. This vibrant Youth Space has since become a safe haven where young people can share meals, build friendships and feel part of a supportive community.
Over the past few years, Gippsland Youth – East Gippsland has hosted a wide range of community events, including outdoor movie nights, pool parties and fun-filled days at the Aqua Park in Lakes Entrance.
Collaborating with local services has been a key part of these efforts, strengthening community ties and broadening the reach of their programs.
The impact speaks volumes — more than 700 young people are now active members. With their support, hundreds have achieved certifications such as White Cards and Pool Lifeguard qualifications, and more than 300 have earned their Boat Licence.
Programs like floristry, photography, and the TAFE Tester initiative have allowed young people to explore future career paths in a hands-on, engaging way.
School holiday programs have offered even more opportunities for connection and growth. Excursions to places like Dinner Plain for snow trips, Gumbuya World, Traralgon Aquatic Centre, and the Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club, Aqua Park – Lakes Entrance have given youth unforgettable experiences that build confidence, friendships, and community pride.
However, this vital service is now at risk.
With funding running out, the future of the Bairnsdale Youth Space hangs in the balance. Without urgent support, hundreds of young people could lose access to a place that not only supports their mental health and wellbeing but also sets them up for a brighter future.
“To keep this space alive, we’re calling on community members, local businesses and government stakeholders to rally together and support Gippsland Youth. Your help can ensure that our young people continue to thrive — not just survive,” Callie Youngs said.
“Let’s save our youth space. Let’s invest in their future.”
