Raymond Island resident Amy Espeseth is working on a new novel, inspired by the koalas she shares her island home with.
Originally from Wisconsin in the central north of the United States, Amy has been living in Australia for almost 30 years and in Gippsland for the past four.
“I think it’s the most beautiful place in the world to live and I’m happy to be here,” she said.
Amy is also an active member of Gippsland Lakes Complete Health’s (GLCH) Community Advisory Group, which is now recruiting new members.
“I wanted to put my own hand up, and to represent the groups I’m part of – as an immigrant, as a younger person and as a member of the LGBTIQA+ community,” Amy said.
“Everyone has a different viewpoint and those
voices need to be heard. We need to understand that everyone has different
needs. When we listen to everyone’s needs and respect those voices, we provide the best service possible.”
GLCH’s Community Advisory Group provides consumer and community feedback on the
organisation’s services
and operations.
For clients and community members, it’s a chance to go behind the scenes and better understand the challenges and opportunities shaping healthcare in East Gippsland.
The group meets once every two months and Amy says the volunteer commitment is manageable and meaningful.
“You get to meet new people, you get to be involved in a community organisation that really cares, and you get to learn a lot while you’re involved in these meetings,” she said.
“Your voice is respected, and you really are heard when you are part of
the group.
“I appreciate being asked questions about the services I receive. I appreciate being asked for feedback and that my feedback is listened to. I encourage anyone who is considering being part of the group to just give it a go.”
GLCH chief operating officer Rebecca Woodland encouraged community members to join the group.
“GLCH is a local community health organisation committed to improving the health and wellbeing in East Gippsland,” she said.
“Our services include medical, allied health, aged and disability care, family support and counselling, early education and
childcare and specialist health services.
“The Community Advisory Group is a vital part of how we evaluate and improve our services, and shape new ones that respond to evolving community needs.”
GLCH is especially encouraging expressions of interest from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with a disability, LGBTIQA+ community members, and people with lived experience of mental illness, family violence or homelessness.
Volunteers receive a supermarket voucher in recognition of their time and contributions.
