East Gippsland residents are being warned of potential scammers offering to asphalt your driveway.
According to a Bairnsdale-based asphalting and bitumen sealing contractor, the bogus workmen are telling unsuspecting clients they’re VicRoads accredited and claim to have leftover material from a previous project, so are able to provide a cheap job.
David Downie, general manager of resources and assets at Cranes, said the product these men are using “is not good”, but rather an inferior quality.
Mr Downie said the men, who reportedly have foreign accents, have been offering their services over the holiday period, when most asphalting companies have been closed.
“Obviously those in a vulnerable position are being scammed as these blokes make a killing doing half a job,” he said.
Mr Downie said he believed they were asking for money upfront and cautioned people to be wary.
He claims one job in which $10,000 was asked for upfront was substandard and fell apart.
