As the state heads into another extreme weather season, Anglicare Victoria is urging households to consider their finances as part of their fire and flood preparations.
Anglicare Victoria’s financial counselling teams work with communities across the state impacted by natural disasters and now is a critical time for households to get their financial affairs in order.
In the state’s east, Anglicare Victoria’s Gippsland Community Legal Service (GCLS) offers free legal help through a Disaster Preparedness and Recovery Project, which has been operating since the Black Summer bushfires.
“Helping Gippsland communities prepare for a disaster and recover from it are key priorities for us, especially at this time of year when we know the region is on alert,” GCLS program manager Simon Suttie said.
“We encourage people to visit our website which has a number of helpful resources on topics like fire evacuation orders and renter rights in a disaster.
“We also have information on wills and powers of attorney, and how these matters relate to being disaster ready.”
There are many other important steps households can take to be fire and flood ready, like clearing excess vegetation around a property, packing an emergency bag and practicing an escape plan.
