Tracey Ah Sam has been honoured as East Gippsland’s Citizen of the Year for 2026, recognising more than three decades of tireless service and dedication to the Omeo community. Since arriving in the early 1990s, Tracey has quietly shaped local life through her volunteer work, leadership, and advocacy, leaving a lasting impact across sport, health, tourism, and community wellbeing.
East Gippsland Shire Mayor, Cr Jodie Ashworth, said Tracey’s contribution is felt across the community. “Tracey simply gets on with supporting others, often behind the scenes and without seeking recognition,” Cr Ashworth said. “For over 30 years she has given her time, skills, and energy to ensure Omeo remains strong, connected, and resilient. Her leadership, generosity, and care for people make her a truly deserving Citizen of the Year.”
Among her most significant achievements is the transformation of the Omeo Recreation Reserve into a vital community asset, a project realised through Tracey’s vision, determination, and grant-writing expertise. She has also held leadership roles with the Omeo Football and Netball Club, Tennis Club, Omeo Alpine Shears, Omeo Medical Centre, and the Omeo Region Business and Tourism Association, contributing to local events, fundraising, and sporting initiatives.
Tracey’s influence is seen in enduring traditions such as the Omeo Alpine Shears, the functionality of the Omeo Relief Centre, and the ongoing success of the Omeo Rodeo. Leading from a genuine desire to see her community thrive, her dedication and generosity have ensured Omeo remains a vibrant, connected, and capable town for generations to come.
