Gold fever will return to the hills of Bullumwaal next month when the Prospectors and Miners Association of Victoria East
Gippsland Branch hosts the 2026 Bullumwaal Gold and Gem Expo at the historic Bullumwaal Hall.
The much-loved annual event will run from 10am to 4pm on Sunday, March 8, celebrating the region’s rich goldfields heritage while offering a hands-on day out for prospectors, collectors, history enthusiasts and families.
Visitors will have the chance to try their luck panning for gold with expert tuition, learn about the tools and techniques used to recover gold and gemstones, and watch demonstrations including a working stamper battery. Displays of local gold, gemstones and historical collections will highlight the area’s long mining history.
A range of interactive activities is planned, including a metal-detecting event for children, raffles and a “stake your claim” challenge where participants can peg out a piece of land for a chance to win a real gold nugget.
Organisers say the event aims to be welcoming to newcomers while also providing valuable insights for experienced prospectors.
A strong line-up of exhibitors will be on hand, including the Bairnsdale Lapidary Club with local mineral displays, the Bairnsdale Historical Society with artefacts from
Bullumwaal and district, and a number of professional prospectors, authors and equipment suppliers showcasing the latest gear and research. Food and drinks will be available throughout the day.
Organisers say the expo continues to grow in popularity, offering a unique opportunity to explore local history, meet industry experts and enjoy a family-friendly day in a picturesque historic setting.
Entry is by gold coin donation.
