Bairnsdale residents are now able to collect free firewood for personal use from designated state forest collection areas across Gippsland.
The autumn firewood season runs until June 30, 2026, however individual collection areas may close earlier due to fire risk or limited supply.
Forest Fire Management Victoria will publish updated maps of available collection areas on its website from March 1, with changes made throughout the season as sites open or close. An interactive online map outlines vehicle access, while downloadable PDF maps include safety and practical information.
Acting deputy chief fire officer Peter Brick said many collection areas had changed this season and urged residents to check updated maps before heading out.
“Firewood in the collection areas has come from storm recovery and bushfire risk-reduction work,” he said.
Collectors are reminded not to operate chainsaws on a Total Fire Ban day, with authorities warning that a single spark could ignite a blaze in dry conditions. Residents are also advised to check daily fire conditions and road closures, drive only on formed roads and be mindful that planned burns or road works may disrupt access.
Within designated areas, collectors can only take wood already on the ground due to natural fall or forest and fire management works.
Cutting down trees, whether living or dead, carries heavy penalties.
Individuals may collect up to two cubic metres per person per day, with a maximum of 16 cubic metres per household per financial year. Authorised officers patrol state forests and can issue on-the-spot fines of up to $814, with more serious offences attracting court-imposed penalties of up to $10,175 and/or 12 months’ imprisonment. Equipment used in offences can also be seized.
