There is plenty of going on at the Bairnsdale and District Basketball Association, both at present and in the future.
The referee cohort continues to develop, with the association delighted with the efforts of those who have progressed and graduated into “C” grade.
The association is currently working on grant applications to continue strengthening the junior referee development pathway.
Just as importantly, they reaffirmed their commitment to supporting referees, especially juniors, by encouraging officials to call out inappropriate behaviour from coaches, parents, scorers, or anyone involved.
Creating a safe, respectful environment for referees remains a priority.
A newly formed a Domestic Sub-committee is now in operation to support domestic competition and grading.
It recently held its first meeting and comprises Eric Cerda, Diane Gardam, John Dick, and Kristen Dwyer.
There have been some great results from the squad programs, highlighted by the under 16 girls winning division five recently at the Junior Country Championships.
The under 16 boys also had an outstanding season, finishing as premiers of nearly every tournament for the season and runner-up in division two at the Junior Country Championships.
The under 12 and 14 teams will contest the Junior Country Championships (JCC) in the school holidays.
Planning is underway for this year’s Bairnsdale Tournament, which will be played on December 5-6.
The association is continuing discussions with the East Gippsland Shire Council and Transport Victoria regarding long-term facility development, including exploring options for an additional stadium, one or two extra courts, and the bus loop replacement. This is an ongoing project, and they will keep the community updated as it progresses.
Aussie Hoops is seen as a program that needs further strengthening, so if you are a volunteer, who would like to get involved, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Works are currently underway to capture more of the club’s history, including the history of JCC and the Bairnsdale Basketball Association, so what has happened in the past can be recognised and celebrated.
