Regional Victoria’s top swimmers, including a 12-strong squad from the East Gippsland Waterdragons, will converge on the Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre in Traralgon this weekend for the Victorian Short Course Country Championships.
Hosted by Gippsland Swimming, the premier winter meet has drawn 540 competitors eager to secure points for their respective clubs.
The event serves as a proven launching pad for elite talent. International representatives such as Sienna Toohey and Henry Allan — who recently competed at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games — both began their championship careers at Country meets.
Club competition is expected to be tight at the top of the standings, with Ballarat Gold, South Gippsland Bass, Geelong, and host club Traralgon contending for the champion club title alongside local contenders Sale and Warragul.
Gippsland clubs will feature heavily across the two-day program. Traralgon leads the local contingents with 71 swimmers, followed by South Gippsland Bass (59), Warragul (35), Sale (12), East Gippsland Waterdragons (12) and Moe (nine).
Swimmers will race over distances ranging from 50 to 400 metres in the 25-metre pool, an environment familiar to many regional athletes whose home facilities lack 50-metre setups.
Each session will conclude with relay events, headlined by the handicapped multi-class and able-bodied team relays.
Action commences at 9am on Saturday and runs through to approximately 4pm on Sunday, with the surge of visiting families and supporters expected to provide a strong economic boost to local accommodation and hospitality providers across the Latrobe Valley.
