Local parents and carers are invited to attend a free, hands-on pediatric first aid workshop next month to learn how to confidently handle common childhood emergencies, accidents and illnesses.
The three-hour Baby and Child First Aid session will be held at the Buchan Neighbourhood House on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, from 10am-1pm.
Delivered by the Sisterhood Project, the training aims to equip Gippsland parents, grandparents and guardians with the practical skills required to manage medical situations for children from birth to their teenage years.
During the workshop, participants will gain skills in several critical areas, including:
– Performing CPR on infants and children and utilising an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
– Distinguishing between choking, gagging and coughing, and performing choking first aid (back blows and chest thrusts).
– Identifying critical red flags for serious head injuries and common childhood illnesses.
– Applying the Pressure Immobilisation Technique (PIT) for snake and funnel-web spider bites.
– Providing immediate first aid for burns, bleeding and bug stings.
– Recognising the signs of anaphylaxis and administering an Epi-Pen auto-injector.
In addition to emergency response, the session will cover proactive accident prevention strategies for drowning, burns, car accidents and general farm safety.
Instructors will also guide attendees on how to make informed healthcare decisions, such as when to monitor a child’s symptoms at home, when to consult a GP and when to go directly to a hospital emergency department.
The educational program is offered free of charge to parents and carers in the Gippsland region, made possible through a grant from the Latrobe Foundation.
