Lucky members of Paynesville Probus Club set off on a caravan trip to explore south-east and South Gippsland, spending time in Yarram and Leongatha to explore the region recently.
During their time in Yarram members visited the town’s art sites, photographing the amazing art on display. The club members also enjoyed an excellent lunch at the Yarram Country Club as well as happy hour and a trivia quiz, organised by intrepid leader Ken.
After two nights in Yarram, the convoy made the “long trek” to Leongatha, stopping at Meeniyan to explore the local shops and galleries, not forgetting the all important morning tea at the bakery. The vanilla slice was a challenge for some.
The first full day at Leongatha saw the group head off through Mirboo North, once again partaking of morning tea at the local bakery, before moving on to lunch at Escargot. Members were treated not only to an excellent lunch (including escargot), but also to an informative presentation by hosts Vincenza and Doug about the rearing of the snails, selection and preparation for the on-site and Melbourne restaurants. For many it was a first-time experience eating escargot.
Grand Ridge Brewery was also a favourite with many of the club members. The drive between Leongatha and Mirboo North brought home the devastation caused by the horrific storm that cut a swathe through the area on Tuesday, February 13.
Words cannot describe the absolute carnage, with large tracts of trees torn out of the hillsides.
The next adventure organised was a visit to David and Judy Dewar’s home to see Davids’s collection of vintage motor vehicles and trucks.
It was hard to choose which of the following was the main highlight: the fresh scones, jam and cream supplied by Judy or the ride in David’s restored Dodge.
The final day began with a visit to the historic village of Loch. Of course, once again, the town benefitted from the club members’ indulgence in morning tea.
Members spent most of the day exploring the many old buildings, including the Loch baker’s oven built in 1890 and the Loch Brewery and Distillery, originally the Union Bank (1902), just two of the many sites visited.
After returning to camp and happy hour, the group went to the Leongatha RSL for a final dinner, before heading back home the next day.
A great time was enjoyed with lots of new experiences and friendships.
