Bairnsdale hosted Sale in a must-win Gippsland League clash at the Bairnsdale Oval on Saturday, however again failed to register its first win of the season.

With both sides winless after the first two rounds, the four

points were vital for both sides

trying to kick start their season.

Unfortunately for the Redlegs they would go down by 34 points.

Bairnsdale made one change bringing in Jake Richards

for Simon Deery who has been playing injured for a number of weeks.

Sale went in without Brad Dessent, Kane Martin and Jack McLaren, replacing them with Mitch Brown, Ethan Dyer and Blake Lane for his first game.

Both sides are full of exciting young talent but it was the influence the Sale prime movers – Jack Johnstone, Shannen Lange and Jack Leslie – were going to have that was always going to be the concern for Bairnsdale.

Sale gained a vital break in the match in the first term, kicking 4.3 to 1.2.

Jack Leslie and brother Will dominated across half back as Bairnsdale struggled to find avenues to goal.

The second quarter was an even affair, with the Redlegs

showing that they could certainly match it with a quality outfit such as Sale.

the Magpies led by 20 points

at half time but Logan Austin and his troops were up and about searching for their first win of 2022.

Josh Wykes was doing a great job in the ruck, while youngster Randall Stewart was again leading the way across half back.

Chris Laverty (three goals), Lange, Brown and Johnstone (all two) kept the score ticking over for the Pies.

The third quarter was another even affair with the young Redlegs showing plenty of fight and serving it right up to the Pies.

They lost Nicholas George for the match late in the quarter when he was red carded after his head appeared to make contact with Sale opponent Cooper Whitehill. Sale led by 19 points at three quarter time.

Bairnsdale tried to mount a challenge in the final time, but it’s always tough with only seventeen players, Sale running out 34-point winners.

Bairnsdale’s best were Austin, Wykes, Tyran Rees, Byron Vickery, Stewart and Liam Giove.

Sale were well served by Jayden Allison, Lachlan Todd, Laverty, Mitchell Thacker, Lane and Jack and Will Leslie.

In the reserves Sale defeated Bairnsdale by 69 points.

Best players for the Redlegs were Jason Waddell, Reece Carstairs, Lachlan Huggins, Daniel Eastman and Jordan Hack.

In the thirds, Bairnsdale was back on the winners’ list, defeating a very competitive Sale by 16

points in a match that could have gone either way at three quarter time.

Best players for Bairnsdale were Samuel Stewart (two goals), Jamieson Humphreys, Oscar Pike, Caleb Crofts and Jadah Frith. Tom Hudson (three goals) and James Dore (two goals) were damaging around goal.

In the fourths, Bairnsdale outclassed Sale to win by 63 points.

Best players were Harper Lamperd, Archer Watt (four goals), Samuel O’Kelly, Jadah Frith, Jesse Bills and James Kapolos (three goals).
