The 13th Gippsland Light Horse was recently invited to to the opening of the Toongabbie cenotaph.
It took several years for the cenotaph to get to the point of it being erected. It will be used for the different ceremonies celebrating and remembering the people who laid their lives down for Australia.
Names of soldiers from the local area who made the ultimate sacrifice are embossed on the cenotaph.
Dignitaries attended, including Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester, local councillors, Army and representatives from the RAAF members and of Sale cadets, while about 50 community members watched the ceremony.
Peter Petrovich, the 13th Gippsland Light Horse president, had the sad news of finding his parade horse Thomas had died in the paddock recently. He was 30 years old and attended most of the Christmas Parades in Bairnsdale and numerous ANZAC Day ceremonies in the region.
Peter is looking for a new horse to replace Thomas but he has to be quiet and good in traffic.
If you have a horse that is not being used, contact Peter (details available at the Advertiser office).
The group is looking for old uniforms and army equipment for the new members who also need horses.
If you wish to join the troop contact the Advertiser office or visit the 13th Gippsland Light Horse Facebook page, as they are always looking for new people to ride.
