Malcolm Mathieson’s latest series of photographs is now on display at Paper Chase Cafe, Main Street, Bairnsdale.
This collection features natural portraits of residents from Clifton Waters Village, a visionary project initiated in 1953 by Canon Smith, the Church Minister of St. John’s Church of England in Bairnsdale.
Canon Smith’s goal was to create a village dedicated to providing affordable housing for low-income individuals who had long been unable to own their homes.
Over time, Clifton Waters Village has blossomed into a close-knit community where residents forge friendships and support each other as needs arise.
Life in the village offers a peaceful, serene existence for those who seek it and opportunities for others to engage with and contribute to the broader community through volunteer work.
The village residents depicted in Mathieson’s images reflect the diversity of human character: helpful, joyful, reserved, solitary, married, single and even those who struggle with contentment or have complaints.
Despite their differences, residents generally find acceptance and support when it matters most.
Situated on the outskirts of Bairnsdale, a larger community, Clifton Waters Village attracts people from various backgrounds and experiences, making it a unique and vibrant place to live.
