Distinctive Options (DO) Noweyung offers a wide range of group programs and extended hours supports in Bairnsdale catering for each person’s individual needs.
Group-based activities give excellent opportunities for individuals to build real-life skills, achieve their goals, engage in social interaction and foster personal development.
DO Noweyung regularly runs short courses in conjunction with Paynesville Neighbourhood Centre to assist their participants to build skills in specific areas of interest presented by the Paynesville Neighbourhood House and supported by DO Noweyung Staff.
DO Noweyung also supports community
relationships presenting at TAFE Industry
Forums and supporting TAFE student placements to enable valuable hands-on learning in a supportive environment.
Warren leads a busy life working two days at Banksia Fine Foods in supported employment and his other days in centre group supports.
Each term, DO Noweyung introduces new program choices empowering participants like Warren to explore diverse interests.
In recent years Warren has had the opportunity to try lots of different programs.
This term Warren has joined “Men’s Group” and “Let’s Get Technical – an IT program”. Men’s Group supports men to build confidence and social skills, addresses men’s health and explores hobbies and activities in the community. Warren is also keen to build his computer skills and gain basic computer knowledge in “Let’s Get Technical”.
“I’m enjoying exploring lots of different programs – the Men’s Group is one of my favourites at the moment,” Warren said.
“I love getting out-and-about in the community.”
In previous terms Warren was building his trade skills in the “Mechanics and Me”, “Electronics” and “My Projects Woodwork” programs where he loved working with his hands in various individual and group projects.
Warren has also refined his photography skills in the “Nature and Photography” program while enjoying some of the sights of East Gippsland.
You might have also heard Warren on the radio when he was part of the Yackety Yak crew. The Yackety Yak show is produced in the DO Noweyung studio and each week they produce a fantastic radio show enabling people with a disability to share their voice.
Yackety Yak showcases the abilities of participants talking about the topics of the day and playing great music.
The show goes to air on REG FM every Thursday from 6-7pm.
Bethany has chosen a different path, focusing on her passion for cooking and the community this term.
Bethany is learning real life independent living skills in the Cooking Group where each participant prepares a meal from start to finish. Participants learn skills in budgeting, meal planning and preparation.
Bethany contributes to the community through DO Noweyung’s Volunteering Program, where she finds fulfillment in various activities like assisting at Neighbourhood House gardens, Meals on Wheels, working in local op shops and participating in park clean-ups.
Bethany enjoys meeting new people and forging connections.
“I really like doing the gardening at Neighbourhood house. We grow vegetables for the Community Kitchen and people who need fresh food. I like meeting the people when I deliver Meals on Wheels too – It’s good to help them,” she said.
Over the past year, Bethany immersed herself in a variety of programs to find personal growth and fulfillment. The “Colour Gang” group allowed Bethany to explore her artistic talents in a vibrant studio setting, where she enjoyed producing colourful, very detailed, intricate drawings.
Through the photography group Bethany expanded her photography skills while capturing the beauty of East Gippsland.
The Women’s Health and Wellness program provided Bethany and her group with comprehensive knowledge and ended the term with a ladies’ pamper day which was enjoyed by all. Bethany also took part in the ‘Financial Wellbeing Course’ and ‘Tackling Technology Course’. These courses were run in collaboration with Paynesville Neighbourhood House.
DO Noweyung Staff supported participants to learn these important practical real-life skills.
