Bairnsdale’s dedicated Meals on Wheels volunteers came together for a celebration lunch to mark National Volunteer Week last Tuesday.
The lunch brought together 65 volunteers who regularly donate their time to Meals on Wheels delivery for clients across the Bairnsdale area.
It gave many the opportunity to catch up with friends and like-minded community members while enjoying a great meal at the Bairnsdale Club.
Helen, who has been involved with the local Meals on Wheels service since the mid-1990s, said she and her friend Shirley loved being able to help others and contribute to making a caring community.
Heather, another dedicated Meals on Wheels volunteer was sporting a hefty lanyard full of National Volunteer Week pins going back more than 15 years.
Also an active volunteer of other community groups, Heather maintains she just loves helping people and brightening their day.
GLCH’s Home and Community Support services executive manager, Penny Cassidy, said volunteers truly showed there is ‘Something for Everyone’ in the wide world of volunteering.
“This year’s National Volunteer Week theme, ‘Something for Everyone’, recognises the diverse passions and talents everyone brings to the act of volunteering,” she said.
“Volunteering plays a vital role in creating positive change in our communities and beyond, and your dedication and generosity to help others, helps create a better future for all of us.
“Our 250-plus volunteers are vital to making our services and programs run and you are all a critical part of that process. Although we are using this week to recognise the outstanding work you all do in our local communities and thank you for truly making a difference, please know that Gippsland Lakes Complete Health is grateful for all your dedication all year round,” Ms Cassidy said.
GLCH has several volunteering opportunities available right now, such as helping children care for school gardens and supporting people in social and activity groups.
