Bairnsdale City Oval will be abuzz this Saturday when Bairnsdale Football Netball Club hosts its annual Fight MND fundraiser as part of Gippsland League’s round nine fixture against Sale.
With the Omeo and District Football Netball League and East Gippsland Football Netball Leagues having a week off courtesy of the King’s Birthday long weekend, a large crowd is expected to attend to watch the game and the pre-game entertainment.
Bairnsdale Football Netball Club is promising a carnival-like atmosphere, with food trucks ground side, including the famous Big Bears Donuts.
Some of the biggest names in sport and society in East Gippsland will slide into a cold bath of freezing ice.
The day has become a great East Gippsland community event in recent years, so much more than just a game of football, though this year’s football match has the potential to be an epic – two close town rivals, fifth and sixth on the ladder, looking to making a statement of where they are heading in 2024.
Bairnsdale Football Netball Club, led by president, Michael Mann, is hoping to better last year’s tally which exceeded $100,000 for the FightMND cause, with the money raised going to fund vital research to help find a cure for Motor Neurone Disease.
“We are hoping to raise in excess of $100,000 but we are mindful of the financial pressure on the local public at present, we have already gone over $35,000 so we are well on our way to another great result,” Mann said.
FightMND is Australia’s largest contributor to MND research to find effective treatment and ultimately a cure for MND.
Prior to the senior football game of football sliders will make the slippery trek into freezing ice, led by Graeme Bryan, Gary Kennedy (Kennedy Trailers), Damien Donohue (Bairnsdale Advertiser), Scott Dullard (Dullards Ford), Chris Cook (Kick in the Bush), Brian Froud (Dahlsens), Brian Box (Grind2Go), Kelly King (Bairnsdale Football Netball Club), Shannon Edwards (Lindenow South Football Netball Club), Craig Radford (Wy Yung Football Netball Club), Sarah Strini
(Lindenow Football Netball Club), Erica Lynch (Lucknow Football Netball Club), Steve Butler (East Gippsland Umpires Association) and the crew from Balls and All.
