Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club (GLYC) is all set to launch its highly anticipated summer sailing season this weekend, promising a blend of tradition, competition and camaraderie.
The festivities will start this Saturday at 11am with a series of events designed to engage both seasoned sailors and enthusiastic newcomers.
The opening ceremony will feature a keynote address by the esteemed Martin Gamble, who will delve into the past and future for the clubhouse, members, sailing craft and life. Gamble’s insights are expected to resonate deeply with the GLYC community, reflecting on the club’s rich history while casting a visionary eye towards its future.
Weather permitting, Martin Gamble will then officially declare the 2024/25 sailing season open at the club’s new flagpole location on the point in front of the clubhouse.
This symbolic gesture will mark the beginning of another exciting chapter in the club’s storied legacy.
Following the opening ceremony, members will gather in the main hall for a shared lunch.
GLYC members are encouraged to bring food to share, fostering a sense of community and togetherness.
This communal meal is a cherished tradition, providing an opportunity for members to reconnect and welcome new faces.
The afternoon’s activities will kick off with the sail past at 1.30pm, where boats will parade past the commodore in a salute, showcasing the club’s impressive fleet.
This will be followed by the highly anticipated Sternchaser race for the “Commodore’s Trophy,” with the first boats setting off at 2pm.
This race is always a highlight, featuring a staggered start that ensures an exciting and competitive finish.
The excitement continues on Sunday with two “around the buoys” races.
The first, the Vice Commodore’s trophy race, will start at 11am.
After the race, everyone can enjoy a BYO lunch break, with the club providing hot apple pie and ice cream for dessert, a delightful treat to recharge before the afternoon’s competition.
The weekend’s events will conclude with the Rear Commodore’s trophy race at 2pm, offering one last chance for sailors to demonstrate their skills and vie for glory.
This weekend promises to be a memorable start to the GLYC sailing season, filled with spirited competition, heartfelt camaraderie, and a celebration of the club’s enduring legacy.
